| 2002 (1998, South China Sea) 2002, the very first Brazzaville record, was recorded at the SS Clove Factory in North Hollywood in 1997. It was produced by Michael Rozon. In songs like Deng Xiaoping, Sewers of Bangkok, IMF and Shioda I began to explore the dark side of globalization. I was trying to tell the stories of the people who are left behind. I was also obsessed with the worlds of merchant shipping, international commerce and the global narco trade. I think that those were the overall themes of the album. In Shams, I told a story that related to an obsession that I had with a Goddess who is supposed to live in the sea south of Java. | Listen or Order CD

| | Somnambulista (2000, South China Sea) Somnambulista, the second Brazzaville album, was also recorded at the SS Clove Factory and produced by Michael Rozon. It was definitely the most difficult album to finish. I think that it is common for artists to completely freak during the making of their second record. I was reduced to tears on more than one occasion and by the end of the mixing I was thoroughly convinced that there was not a single worthy moment on the whole thing. Songs like Old man Dub, Boeing and 3rd and Broadway are portraits of tragic figures from the demi-monde. Sandman is an ode to my dead friend Mark Sandman. Super Gizi is an attempt to capture the feeling of peace that I feel when on a long flight, 30,000 feet above the ocean. | Listen or Order CD

| | Rouge On Pockmarked Cheeks (2002, South China Sea) Rouge On Pockmarked Cheeks, the 3rd Brazzaville album, was recorded in 2000 and 2001. I recorded most of it in my own studio and it was mixed by Michael Rozon, Kenny Lyon, Nigel Godrich and Tony Hoffer. I was in a pretty dark phase of my life when I recorded this record. Motel Room and rainy Night are songs about 2 very close friends that died. North Koreatown is a sentimental ode to the halcyon days of my early teenage years. High Life is the story of an aging fashion model. Trona is about my favorite creepy desert town. Xanax is my little post 9-11 song. Late Night Lullaby was written for my little son. | Listen or Order CD

| | Welcome To Brazzaville (2004, Web of Mimicry) Welcome To Brazzaville, our greatest hits album, features songs from the first 3 records as well as a couple of new ones. (Love Sky and Christmas in East Cirebon). Trey Spruance from Mimicry records approached me with the idea of putting out a record that would introduce Brazzaville to a wider audience. Love Sky is the story of my mother and father and of distant memories I have of going to work with my father when he was still a trucker, hauling shipping containers from Long Beach and San Pedro to the train yards in Vernon. Christmas in EC is about a couple of young low budget travelers whose lovely existence gets destroyed by heroin. | Order CD

| | Hastings Street (2004, Soyuz) Hastings Street, the most recent Brazzaville album, is named after the infamous Hastings Street in Vancouver. It is basically the Skid Row of Vancouver, full of junkies and prostitutes. The title track on the CD was inspired by the life story of a guy I once met. There are several love songs on the record(Old Folks, It Only Hurts). There are also several stories about different characters. Londres is the tale of a young girl growing up in East L.A. She is surrounded by poverty and violence. She listens to the Cure and the Smiths and dreams of one day escaping to the promised land of Londres (London). Love Is the Answer is the story of an abused daughter who escapes to SF with her best friend. Lagos Slums is the story of a Nigerian man struggling to support his family in the New World of globalization. | |
